In 2001 Andrzej Wajda and Wojciech Marczewski formed a film school (Wajda School, formerly known as Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing). Based on the concept of the „Film Group” model, they focused on the effectiveness of the group work method and on the collaboration of generations. They offered a programme that is unique in Europe, combining education with production targeted to film professionals.
Wajda School carries out the Documentary Programme - DOK PRO, the Feature Film Programme – DEVELOPMENT LAB, the SCRIPT Screenwriting Programme, PRODUCTION PROGRAMME aimed at creative producers (together with the Polish Film Institute, the Polish Audiovisual Producers Chamber of Commerce and Media Desk Poland), the FILM AWARD Programme to promote experimental cinema (together with the Polish Film Institute and Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the SCRIPT PRO screenwriting competition (together with the OFF PLUS CAMERA International Festival of Independent Cinema in Kraków, the Polish Film Institute and HBO). Moreover, Wajda School, with Wajda Studio and European partners, carries out EKRAN (the Polish word for „screen”) - the International Training Programme for Film Professionals. Wajda School Foundation also organizes FILM KINDERGARTEN – a course for secondary school pupils and college students.
As part of the programmes offered by the school, the most interesting directors of the young generation, both Polish and foreign, develop and produce their projects. More than 70 documentary and feature films, as well as more than 200 shorts have been shown and awarded at the most prestigious festivals, including Berlinale, San Sebastian, Karlovy Vary, Hot Docs, IDFA and DOK Leipzig. The school enjoys the European Film Academy nominee, too.
Wajda School operates with the support of the Polish Film Institute and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. In 2011 the school opened its branch in Żyrardów and it has become the subject to the City of Żyrardów patronage. The school enjoys the honorary patronage of the European Film Academy.
